The Murder Complex - Lindsay Cummings

Nothing. There is a groan from behind me. The girl's eyes start to flutter open.

Only one of you will leave that room alive.
'She's done!' I yell to the door. I look up at the cameras. I hold up the badge. 'I'm done!"
Nothing. I slump down. I grab the dagger from my waistband and walk over to the girl. Her face is bloodied and bruised. I hold the dagger right above her heart.
Her eyes flutter open. They look right into mine.
Blue. Peri's favorite color.
"Do it" she says through tears. "I want to die. Do it. Please. We don't have a choice."
"It'll be quick," I whisper.
Then I drive the dagger right into her heart.

Review: Torn Away by Jennifer Brown
Torn Away - Jennifer Brown

Wow I did not expect this! But I am happy to say that it was absolutely amazing. Beautifully written, powerful and extremely emotional. I particularly enjoyed how slowly the story snuck up on me. I recommend only skimming the blurb because it actually gives a lot of the story away. Having said that, I'm not going to get into too much details about the story.

My old life was that far away. Gone. As if the tornado's damage would never be complete. It had destroyed my present, laid waste to my future, an was now busy eating up my history, too, as I forgot what life was before.

Short version is: this is the story of Jersey, a Midwestern girl that has grown up with the threat of tornadoes her whole life, and how she loses everything when a huge tornado hits. She has survived a nightmare but hasn't come out a winner. Jersey was a great character. . . oh I loved her. She was such a broken soul, you didn't know if she'd ever be put back together. She has lost everything including her hope, her identity, her faith, the ones she loved. I won't say anything else, only that I cried, I sobbed and then I cried some more.

I'm wondering if it's even possible to lose "everything" or if you just have to keep redefining what "everything" is. . . I guess that's just my way of saying you don't need to worry about me giving up. I'm just going to keep redefining "everything" for as long as I need to, because I'm pretty sure that's the best way to keep on going when you feel like you've lost it all.

Whilst this story is tragic and heartbreaking it’s also endearing and hopeful. It filled me with all kinds of emotions, ranging from frustration and anger and sadness to joy and happiness and love, and at the end it left me feeling content. To sum it up, it was and incredibly emotional read. . . a powerful novel, intense, and moving. You can’t help but find yourself taking note of the people and things that make your life worth living, after this experience. Seriously, this is probably one of those books that I will be thinking about for days and days afterwards. This is what every books should be. Torn Away will blow you away!

Review: Broken Skies by Theresa Kay
Broken Skies - Theresa Kay

I've always been a huge sci-fi fantasy lover, and the premise of this book sucked me in immediately. Broken Skies is a young adult science fiction story that will grab you from the first page and still doesn't let go at the last page.

This book as such a fantastically fierce cast of characters, and Jax is on top of that list. She's a fighter, she has no choice but to be one. Jax knows what she has to do to survive, what needs to be done, even if it makes her a killer. I love her attitude and humor which added some comic relief to this dark sci-fi book.  I also enjoyed her unfailing loyalty to her brother, her determination to get him back. She knew what she had to do to get him back, she was completely willing to do it.

Lir is an alien that she meets. You’ll want to slap him upside the back of his head, kick him in the shin, and even scream at him sometimes but you can’t help but to love him.  I really need to find Hot Alien Boy :)
My emotions were everywhere throughout the entire book. One moment there was scenes that were so intense that I wanted to yell at Lir or Jax. I was practically jumping up and down during some of the scenes.

"The E'rikon have no clue that they created a monster, one that hates the darkness but also craves the serenity that would come with its embrace."

So to sum up - The plot was fantastic, the characters were realistic, and the outcome was completely unexpected. I love the ending along with the whole book and am excited to start the next book, and not just for the possibility of more scenes between Jax and Lir (please, let there be many!). Now when does that next one come out?

Review: The Walking Dead Volume 20
The Walking Dead, Vol. 20: All Out War Part 1 - Stefano Gaudiano, Cliff Rathburn, Charlie Adlard, Robert Kirkman

There are some interesting parts that I honestly enjoyed, but the overall story is so over-the-top silly, it's hard to stay in it. Negan finally finds himself at war with Rick Grimes and his group of survivors. And to say the least, there will be casualties... I like the fact that Kirkman can still surprise me, although i think that he has gotten a little stale with repetitive storylines.

I’m curious to see what happens to Negan as the series progresses, and whether he’ll meet the same fate as the Governor once All Out War comes to an end. Interestingly enough, a comparison could have been drawn between the Governor and Rick. It’s not far fetched to imagine Rick becoming twisted and sadistic like the Governor if something were to happen to his son.

Ever since the Something To Fear arc, it felt like we have been building towards this war. I just expected more to be honest. People keep saying its building up and it will kick into gear in part 2 ( issues 100-114 were all building to this!!! ).  I know war is methodical and slow... but I want these characters to show their worth.

In conclusion. The art is fantastic as always. I think its hard to really judge part 1 until we have the whole story... Hopefully part 2 is better... Anyhow, I'm very excited for the last part of All Out War, and what this really means for The Walking Dead.
